Illusions

January 6, 2011

“Illusions” is one of my all time favorite books. It was written by Richard Bach and I was led to it after reading one of his other titles, a little book you may have heard of called “Jonathan Livingston Seagull”. I just finished reading “Illusions” again for about the tenth time. Even though I know the basic story, I’m always surprised at how much I get out of it. Each time I’m a slightly different person when I read it and different things stand out. This time there were two lines that really struck me.

#1. “If your happiness depends on what somebody else does, I guess you do have a problem.” Man I love that line! It goes along with the whole “Don’t take it personally.” Idea. Great in theory but challenging to remember in the moment. Especially those moments when you’re feeling really mad at someone. It always works out when I can remember to activate it though.

#2. “We are all free to do whatever we want to do.” On the surface this idea sounds like lunacy but when I really thought about it, I realized it was true. We all make choices for different reasons and there is always more than one way of dealing with a situation and we may not always like the choices we have, but we are free to choose the one we want.

I know this is a work of fiction but a lot of the ideas that he writes about make a great deal of sense to me. I love being able to return to it whenever I need a refresher!

What book has made a difference in your life? When was the last time you read it.
