Where are you looking?

January 29, 2011

I’ve noticed lately when I walk I tend to look down. Obviously I look up when I come to an intersection or often enough so that I don’t get lost (much) but for the most part, I’m looking down just a few steps ahead of where I am. Then today I heard the idea of the following: Where are your best years, ahead of you or behind you? Hmmmm. It really made me think about how I view the course of my life and even my recently noticed habit of looking down instead of looking straight ahead. I heard once that people who look down tend to live in or think about the past, those who look straight ahead are in the present and, you guessed it, if you look up, you tend to look to the future. I believe that I’m living in the present but my habits would tend to indicate that I think about the past more than I’m aware of. I’d like to think that my best days are still ahead of me. Yes, at 46, I still believe that I have a lot to offer and contribute; maybe even more now than when I was younger.

What about you? Are your best years behind you or ahead of you?
